Card Key Systems On A Budget

Posted on: 22 June 2018

If you are looking to increase security at your business, then it may be a good idea to invest in a sophisticated card access control system. The systems can cost a good deal of money, and if your company is a smaller one, then you may be unable to afford the most high-tech system possible. But there are a number of things you can do to reduce your costs without having to sacrifice security. Keep reading to learn about a few.

Consider Access Doors Carefully

The large costs in regard to a card access system involve the actual card readers themselves. In fact, it can cost more than a few thousand dollars to secure each door. This means that you should carefully consider the doors where access should be limited and only choose readers for doors where security concerns are a real issue. For example, you may want to limit access to IT, product development, or money storage areas.

However, you probably do not need to limit access to other parts of your company like the HR department, kitchens, and general spaces where office workers are located. General access to these areas can be properly limited by placing an access keypad or card reader on the front door of the building. An internal door is a good access point too, especially if you have many clients coming into your company. You probably do not need an exterior door card reader along with one on an interior door though, so choose one or the other.

Additionally, keep in mind that there are different types of access that can be granted, so a single card can be used to gain access to only one space or several. Access is programmed on the specific key card, and this task is fairly easy.

Look At Maintenance Costs

Some access card and keypad companies will charge a flat rate for maintenance costs. These costs may be higher if they include replacement cards, the creation of new cards, and the maintenance of the access panels. However, with cheaper maintenance plans, you will often have to pay for new and replacement cards. These cards usually only cost up to about $5, but replacements can cost you quite a bit of money if you have a large company with many employees.

Keep in mind that access cards will wear out with regular use, so the eventual replacement of all cards will be necessary, even if your employees are good about not losing the cards.
