Make Your House Stand Out Above The Rest: What You Can Do

Posted on: 17 June 2018

Selling your home may not always be as easy as you want it to be, especially if you have a lot of other homes around you that are for sale. The last thing you want is your home sitting on the market for months at a time. If there are a lot of other homes around you for sale, then you're going to need to do something to make your home stand out. Read on for a list of things you can do to make your home more appealing to a potential buyer.

Look At The Homes That Are Selling

If you have homes around you that are selling quickly, take a look at what they have that yours doesn't. Look at their listing and pay attention to the price as well as the interior and exterior of the homes. If they are updated on the interior, and the exterior has newer siding, windows, roof and updated landscaping, and yours doesn't, that may be why your home isn't selling. You may need to do a little extra work around your house and update it a bit, or lower your selling price in an effort to sell your home. Talk to your realtor on these comparisons to see what you should do.

Make Minor Updates

If you aren't interested in making major updates to your house, making some minor updates may help sell your house.  A few minor updates include:

  • Freshen the Landscaping. A landscaped yard can make your home more appealing. If your house is too boring on the outside or doesn't look well-cared for, a potential buyer may not even want to look on the inside. Make sure that yard is mowed and kept trimmed, add a small flower garden or flower pots or hanging baskets to add some appeal. Freshen any mulch in the yard and spray for weeds in rock or garden beds.
  • Brighten the Front Door. A bright front door can help add appeal to any home. Change the color from boring white to something a little bolder such as red, yellow, turquoise, or even black. Add some new house numbers to the door and new hardware as well.
  • Update the Paint. The paint inside your home could use a fresh coat. Go with something light to open up the house a bit more and make it look larger. Paint over bold colors and give it a more neutral pallet instead.

These are fairly inexpensive updates you can do to make your house more appealing. Make sure to also clear up as much furniture and clutter as possible and be sure your home is thoroughly cleaned before any open houses or showings. Talk to your real estate agent about what other things you can do to make your house stand out above the rest.
